Buffalo's nickname city of light came from the fact that it was the first city in North America with electric lighting. This of course, was supplied by nearby Niagara falls. At that time our geographical location led us to be a dominant industrial power at a time when all other large cities were using gas lighting to illuminate their houses.  Political concerns largely from downstate eroded away at our advantage, and distributed the power equally. In any case this area is still very important in terms of the large volume and area it services.
At the Turn of the Century Buffalo, New York Had more millionaires than any other U.S. city.
Buffalo and Western NY area are 2nd in Apple production in the whole U.S.
Buffalo and Western NY area are 2nd in Grape production in the whole U.S.
Buffalo was once the home to 38 breweries within city limits. Presently there are about 3 producing various micro-brews. 
It has been said in 1904 that the citizens of Buffalo, N.Y. drank enough beer that year to equivalent Niagara Falls flowing for over 90 seconds!!!
The name Buffalo is debated to have come from 2 sources. One story tells of and indian named Buffalo who fished on Buffalo creek., The other from the French who named it Beau Fleuv, which is french for beautiful river.
Buffalo was once a great port and the largest supplier of grain in the world!
Buffalos highest standing was 8th largest city in the U.S. in terms of population.
Buffalo is the home to ONLY football team that plays in New York State.
